Getting started
How to Print a WhatsApp Conversation
WhatsApp does not offer a way to print a full chat. The reliable route is to export the conversation, convert it to a PDF, and print the PDF from any viewer.
Why not print straight from the phone
The app is designed for scrolling. A screenshot captures only the messages on screen, so a long conversation turns into dozens of images that are hard to put in order. An export gives you the whole conversation in sequence, with dates, times and names, and a PDF gives you pages that print consistently.
Step 1: export the chat
Export the chat from the phone. Choose Without media for a text-only record, which is smaller and prints the same messages. Choose With media only if the photos need to appear on paper.
- On Android, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, choose More, then Export chat.
- On an iPhone, open the chat, tap the contact or group name, scroll down and choose Export Chat.
- Pick the media option you want and save the file to your computer.
Step 2: convert to PDF
Upload the .txt, or the .zip if you want photos, to ChatIntoPDF. The free full preview shows the complete layout, so you can look through the conversation before you pay. When you are satisfied, pay once per chat from $1.99 to get the PDF. No account is needed.
Choosing a print-friendly style
ChatIntoPDF offers four styles: Classic, Clean, Formal and Book. Compare them in the free preview at roughly the size you will print. A style with plenty of white space and clear separation between the name, the time and the message text is usually easiest to read on paper. For a long, text-heavy chat, that readability matters more than decoration, so choose the style that reads most comfortably on the screen at print size.
- Look for clear spacing between messages so the conversation is easy to follow.
- Check that names and times are easy to tell apart from the message text.
- Scroll several pages in the preview, not just the first one, before you decide.
Step 3: print from the PDF
Open the PDF in any viewer and start the print dialog. The shortcut is Ctrl+P on Windows and Cmd+P on a Mac. The settings below make the biggest difference to the result.
- Set the scale to 100 percent or Actual size. Fit to page can shrink small text too far.
- Choose the paper size that matches the paper in your printer, usually A4 or Letter.
- Enter a page range if you only need part of the chat.
- Turn on double-sided printing if your printer supports it, to save paper.
- Use the print preview to check the first page and any messages with emojis before you print the whole file.
Margins and page breaks
The default margins work for most chats. If a message is split awkwardly across two pages, try slightly smaller margins, or print a short test range first to confirm the layout before you use a lot of paper.
Printing a very long chat
A long chat prints best in sections. If the conversation runs to hundreds of pages, split the .txt by date, convert each part, and print the periods you need. Use the page range field to print only the part that matters, and keep the full PDF for reference.
Saving paper and ink
Printing in black and white or grayscale is enough for text. Print only the pages you need, and use draft or economy mode if your printer offers it. A chat printed for reading rarely needs colour, unless photos are included.
- Export without media for a light text-only record.
- Preview several pages in the chosen style before paying.
- Print at 100 percent scale on the paper size your printer uses.
