How to convert a WhatsApp chat to PDF

A WhatsApp chat can be turned into a clean, readable PDF in three stages: export the chat from the app, convert it in your browser, and choose a layout. This guide walks through each stage and explains what to check before you pay.

What you need before you start

You need two things: the chat on the phone that holds it, and an export file that WhatsApp creates for you. Every individual and group chat has a built-in Export chat option. It produces either a plain text file or a zipped archive that also contains the photos and other media shared in the chat. You do not need to install any software, and you do not need access to the other person’s phone.

Decide before you start what the PDF is for. A readable record of the words is a different job from a keepsake with pictures, and that choice changes which export option you should pick. The guide on exporting with or without media covers the trade-off in detail.

Step one: export the chat from WhatsApp

Menu labels depend on your phone and app version, but the path is the same almost everywhere. Open the chat, go to its info screen, and choose Export chat. You will be asked whether to include media. The phone then shows a share sheet, so you can save the file to your Files app or Google Drive, or send it to your own email address so it reaches your computer.

1. Open the chat or group you want to keep.
2. Tap the contact or group name at the top to open its info screen.
3. Choose Export chat. On Android, this sits under the three-dot menu, then More.
4. Pick Include media or Without media, then save or share the file.

Step two: convert the export with ChatIntoPDF

Common mistakes to avoid

• Exporting the wrong chat. Individual and group chats are exported separately, so confirm the chat name before you tap Export.
• Choosing media when you only need the words. The archive is larger and takes longer to process, so use Without media for a text-only record.
• Skipping the preview. Check the first and last pages, and a few dates in the middle, before downloading.
• Deleting the export too early. Keep the original file until the PDF is saved somewhere safe.

When a PDF is the right format

A PDF is a good choice when you want a fixed, portable copy of a conversation. It opens on any phone, tablet or computer, it looks the same every time, and it does not depend on the WhatsApp app staying installed. That makes it useful for keeping a record of a project discussion, a family group, a class or a club, or a conversation you may need to show someone later.

A PDF is less useful when you need the conversation to stay live or searchable across many chats at once. In that case, keep the original export alongside the PDF so you always have the raw text.
