What does Export chat mean in WhatsApp?
Export chat is a built-in WhatsApp option that saves a copy of one conversation as a file. It does not change your chat and it does not send anything to the other person.
The short answer
Export chat creates a copy of one conversation. WhatsApp writes the messages into a text file and, if you choose, packages photos, videos and documents alongside it. The original chat stays on your phone exactly as it was.
What it does and does not do
- Does: create a file you can save, share, print or convert
- Does not: delete messages, notify the other person or back up your account
- Does not: produce a formatted document on its own; the file is plain text
Without media or with media
Without media produces a single .txt file. It is small and quick, and it keeps the text, dates and sender names. Include media adds the attachments and returns a .zip archive. Choose it when photos, videos or documents matter to the record, and expect a much bigger file.
Where to find it
- Open the chat you want.
- On Android, use the three-dot menu, then More, then Export chat. On iPhone, tap the chat name and choose Export Chat.
- Pick Without media or Include media.
- Choose where to save or share the file.
The wording and menu position can differ by app version. If the steps above do not match your screen, look for Export chat in the chat’s menu.
