Getting started
WhatsApp chat export: what it is and how to use it
Every WhatsApp conversation can be exported as a file. This guide explains what that file holds, how to create it, and how to turn it into a document you can read, print and keep.
What a WhatsApp chat export is
WhatsApp has a built-in Export chat option for every individual and group conversation. It writes the conversation to a file you can save, share or keep. The file is not a backup you can restore from, and it is not a formatted document. It is a plain text record with one line per message, showing a timestamp, the sender and the message text.
If you choose to include media, WhatsApp packs the text file together with the photos, videos and documents from that chat into a .zip archive. Without media, you get a single .txt file.
What the export file contains
Each line usually starts with a date and time, followed by the sender and the message. System lines such as encryption notices or "X added Y" events also appear. The exact layout depends on your phone’s language and app version, so the date format can differ from one phone to another.
- Text messages with date, time and sender
- Group events such as joins, leaves and name changes
- Media placeholders such as <Media omitted> when media was not included
- Attached files only when you choose Include media, stored in the .zip
Why a plain text file is hard to read
Opening the .txt in a notepad app works, but long conversations become a wall of lines. Photos are missing, replies are not grouped and nothing is styled. A PDF fixes that: it keeps the order, the dates and the names, and it can be printed, shared or archived.
How to export a chat
- Open the chat or group you want.
- On Android, tap the three-dot menu, choose More, then Export chat. On iPhone, tap the contact or group name at the top, scroll down and choose Export Chat. Menu wording can change slightly between app versions.
- Pick Without media for a text-only file, or Include media if you want photos and files too.
- Save or share the file to your phone, email or cloud drive.
Converting the export to PDF
Once you have the file, you can turn it into a PDF. ChatIntoPDF (chatintopdf.com) is an independent tool that does this entirely in your browser. You add the .txt or .zip, pick a style and review a full preview before paying. Nothing is uploaded, so the conversation stays on your device during conversion. ChatIntoPDF is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
Four styles are available. Classic uses chat bubbles, Clean uses a document layout, Formal numbers each entry and Book gives a keepsake look. Higher tiers add inline photos and a full-size gallery.
Tips before you export
- Export one chat at a time, since there is no export-all button.
- Include media only when you need the pictures, because the .zip is much larger.
- Keep the original file. A later export is a newer snapshot of the same chat.
- Check the preview for names and dates before you download.
Frequently asked questions
Is a WhatsApp chat export the same as a backup?
No. A backup is for restoring your account on a phone. An export is a readable copy of one conversation that you can save, print or convert.
Does the export include messages I have already deleted?
An export reflects what is in the chat on your phone when you create it. It cannot recover messages that were already removed from your device.
Do I need an account to convert a chat?
No. ChatIntoPDF needs no account and no subscription. You pay a 24-hour pass from $1.99 only when you want to download the converted PDF.
Can I export a chat from WhatsApp Web?
Export is done from the phone app. See the WhatsApp Web guide on this site for why and what to do instead.
