WhatsApp does not offer a single button that downloads every chat as a readable file. You export conversations one at a time from the phone, then convert them. Here is how to do that well.

Backups are not readable history

WhatsApp backups to Google Drive or iCloud exist so you can restore your account on a new phone. They are not a format you can open and read. Restoring a backup brings chats back to a phone; it does not produce a document you can search, print or share.

Export is the readable route

For a readable copy, use Export chat on each conversation. You get a text file per chat, plus a .zip with the media if you choose that option. This works for one-to-one chats and for groups.

A practical plan for a full download

1. List the chats you want to keep and start with the ones that matter most.
2. Export each one with Include media if you need the photos and files, or Without media for a lighter text record.
3. Save each export into a folder named by contact or group and by date.
4. Convert each export to PDF, choosing a style that fits its purpose.
5. Keep the PDFs and the original exports together.

Mind the storage

Media-heavy exports can be large. A chat with years of photos and videos produces a big .zip, so check free space on your phone and computer before you start. Exporting without media first gives you the text quickly, and you can export a second copy with media later for the chats that need it.

What you cannot recover

An export only contains what is still in the chat on your phone. If messages were removed from the device before you exported, the export cannot bring them back. Export important chats on a schedule rather than waiting until you need them, because a file made today reflects the chat as it is today.

Keep a checklist

• Note which chats you have exported and when.
• Store PDFs and originals in the same dated folder.
• Check each PDF preview for missing dates or names.
• Keep a second copy somewhere else, such as an external drive.
