Exporting from WhatsApp
How to export and convert a large WhatsApp chat
A chat with years of messages is harder to export than a short one. The trick is to understand the message limits, choose your media setting carefully and split the text when the file gets unwieldy.
What limits a large export
WhatsApp caps how many messages a single export can contain, and the cap depends on whether you include media. Media files also make the archive much bigger, which can slow a download or cause a failed transfer on a weak connection. If your chat is very long, the export may stop short of your oldest messages, so check the first date in your PDF against what you remember.
Choose media on purpose
Before you export a large chat, decide whether the photos and voice notes are part of the record you want. For a written conversation, Without Media is quicker, smaller and less likely to fail. For a family archive where the pictures matter, Include Media is worth the extra size. You can always export twice: one text-only file for the words and one media archive for the pictures.
Split a chat by date range
The export screen does not let you pick a date range, so if you want the chat in parts you split the text file yourself. Each message in the export starts with a date and time, which makes it easy to find the boundaries. Work carefully so you do not cut a message in half.
- Export the full chat without media first, so you have one clean source file.
- Open the .txt in a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit.
- Find the first message of each year, for example the line that starts with 01/01/2024, and cut the text at that point.
- Save each block as its own file named by its range, such as Chat-2023.txt and Chat-2024.txt.
- Convert each part separately in ChatIntoPDF and check the preview of each one.
Check the split files
Open each part and look at its first and last lines. Messages that run over several lines have continuation lines without a date stamp, so make sure your cut falls before a dated line and not in the middle of a message. If a part looks wrong, go back to the source file and adjust the boundary.
Keep it as one PDF or several
Splitting makes a large chat easier to check and easier to share, but a single PDF is better when you want one continuous record. The Book style reads like a long document, which suits a full history, while Clean is a good choice for a shorter part you want to skim. ChatIntoPDF lets you choose the style before you download.
- Use one PDF for a complete record that you will rarely open.
- Use several PDFs for chats you need to search, review or send to someone.
- Name each part with its date range so the folder reads clearly.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my large chat fail to export?
Large exports can run into WhatsApp limits or stall on a slow connection. Try again without media, or export a shorter date range by splitting the text file.
Does ChatIntoPDF split chats by date for me?
The split is done on the exported text file before conversion, so each part is a normal export that converts like any other chat.
Does a large chat cost more to convert?
Pricing is the 24-hour pass from $1.99 for unlimited chats for a day, not a charge per message.
Will the split files look different from the full chat?
They use the same layout and style. Only the date range changes, so check each part before you save it.
