Exporting from WhatsApp
How to save a WhatsApp chat as a PDF on iPhone
You can do the whole job on the iPhone: export the chat inside WhatsApp, save it to the Files app and convert it in Safari. The steps below cover each part, with the small details that trip people up.
Step 1: export the chat inside WhatsApp
- Open WhatsApp and tap the chat you want.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top to open the info screen.
- Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
- Choose Without Media for a text-only file, or Include Media if the pictures matter.
Step 2: save the file to Files
When the share sheet opens, choose Save to Files. Pick an iCloud Drive folder you will remember, such as a folder called Chat Exports. Saving to Files keeps the export somewhere safe and makes it easy to reach from Safari when you come to convert it.
Step 3: convert the file in Safari
- Open Safari and go to chatintopdf.com.
- Tap the upload control and choose the .txt or .zip from the Files app.
- Check the free preview to confirm the dates, senders and message order.
- Pick a style: Classic, Clean, Formal or Book.
- Pay only when you are ready. The 24-hour pass starts at $1.99 and covers unlimited chats for a day.
The conversion runs in Safari on the device, and the chat is not uploaded. There is no account to create and no subscription to cancel.
Step 4: save the PDF
Once the download finishes, open it from the downloads list and use the share sheet to save it to Files. Give it a clear name that includes the contact and the date range, so you can find it later among your other documents.
iPhone-specific tips
- Free up some storage before exporting with media, because the archive can be large.
- Use Wi-Fi for large files so the download is quick and does not eat your mobile data.
- Use the search box in the Files app to find an export by contact name.
- Keep the raw export as well as the PDF, so you can convert it again with a different style.
If you convert several chats in one sitting, keep each export in its own named file in Files before you start. That way a mistake in one conversion never costs you the original, and you can re-run any chat with a different style without exporting it again from WhatsApp. A tidy Files folder also makes the batch easy to finish later.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do the whole process on my iPhone?
Yes. You export inside WhatsApp, save to Files and convert in Safari, so no computer is needed.
Why is Save to Files missing from the share sheet?
The option appears only for files you can save. Scroll the share sheet, and if it is still missing, export the chat again.
Does the iPhone version work differently from the computer version?
The steps differ only in how you reach the file. The conversion, preview and styles are the same.
Is the chat uploaded when I convert it on my iPhone?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and the chat is not uploaded.
