How to export a WhatsApp group chat and make it a PDF
A group chat holds many voices, names and dates in one long thread. Exporting it is simple, but knowing how participants and system messages appear makes the PDF far easier to follow.
Start the export from the group info screen
- Open the group in WhatsApp.
- Tap the group name at the top to open the group info screen.
- Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
- Choose Without Media for a clean text record, or Include Media for photos and documents shared in the group.
The export covers the whole group conversation you can see, so scroll back in the app first if you want older messages to be included in the file.
How participant names appear
Each message is labelled with the name of the sender as it appears on your phone. Contacts you have saved show with their saved names. People who are not in your contacts appear as phone numbers, which can make a long group harder to follow in the PDF. If a name matters to the record, it helps to save the contact before you export.
System messages and dates
Group exports also keep the system lines, such as someone joining, leaving, changing the group name or changing the group photo. These lines are useful in a record because they show when the group changed. Each line carries its own date and time, so the PDF keeps the order of events the way it happened.
