What to do with an exported WhatsApp chat file

Once WhatsApp hands you an export, you have a plain text file or a zip archive. This guide shows what those files contain, how to open them safely and how to turn them into a PDF you can read anywhere.

What is inside the export

A text export is a plain .txt file. Each line holds a date, a time, a sender name and the message. A message that runs over several lines keeps its extra lines underneath. If you exported with media, WhatsApp packages that text file together with the photos, videos, audio and documents in a .zip archive. The text file inside is often named after the chat, or it may carry the word chat in its name.

Open it and check it first

1. If you have a .zip, extract it into its own folder so the files stay together.
2. Open the .txt in Notepad, TextEdit or any other text editor.
3. Scroll to the start and the end and confirm the dates and senders look right.
4. Note any line that is cut off, missing or garbled, so you can fix or re-export it.
