Exporting a WhatsApp Chat From a Dual or Clone App
Some phones run two WhatsApp accounts side by side, either through a built-in dual-app feature or a third-party clone. The chat you want lives in one of them, so the export must come from that same app.
Why a dual app needs care
A dual or clone app is a separate copy of WhatsApp with its own data. Its chats, contacts and backups do not appear in the main app, and the main app cannot export them. If you open the main WhatsApp, look for a chat that only exists in the clone, and export from there, you will find nothing. The first step is always to identify which copy holds the conversation.
The same applies to WhatsApp Business. On many phones it is a separate app with its own chats, so an export from the personal app will not include business conversations.
Where dual apps come from
Many Android phones include a dual-app feature in their settings, usually under a name such as Dual apps, Dual messenger or App cloner. Some phones offer a second space instead. Third-party clone apps also exist. The icon for the second copy often carries a small badge or a different colour, which makes it easy to tell apart from the main app. iPhones do not offer a clone feature, but WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business can both be installed as separate apps, each with its own chats.
Export from the right copy
Open the copy that holds the chat, not the one you usually use. Confirm the phone number or account shown in its settings matches the conversation you want. Then export from inside that app.
- Open the dual or clone copy of WhatsApp, using its own icon.
- Open the chat you want, then tap the menu or the contact name.
- Choose Export chat, then pick With media or Without media.
- Save the file to a place you can find, such as Downloads, or share it to your file manager.
Finding the exported file
Clone apps sometimes store their files in a separate area that is harder to reach. If you cannot see the export, use the share sheet at the moment of export and choose a location such as Downloads or Files. Avoid saving directly into the app folder, because file managers may hide it. Once the file is in a common folder, it is easy to upload.
Keeping the two accounts apart
- Give each exported file a clear name that includes the account or number, so you do not mix them up later.
- Confirm that the chat name in the .txt matches the conversation you expected.
- Export from the copy that actually holds the chat, not from the one you use most often.
- Keep the two sets of exports in separate folders.
Unofficial clone apps
Third-party clone apps are not made by WhatsApp. They can change where files are stored, ask for broad permissions, or behave differently from the official app when you export. If your export keeps failing or landing in an unexpected place, try the built-in dual-app feature of your phone or the official WhatsApp Business app instead. Whatever tool you use, check the exported file before you rely on it.
Converting the export with ChatIntoPDF
Once you have the .txt or .zip from the correct copy, upload it to ChatIntoPDF. The conversion runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. Pick one of four styles, Classic, Clean, Formal or Book, and check the free preview. The 24-hour pass from $1.99 covers unlimited chats for the day, which is handy if you have several accounts to convert. ChatIntoPDF is an independent tool and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
If the chat you expected is not in the PDF, it was almost certainly exported from the other copy. Go back and check which app holds the conversation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I export a chat from the main WhatsApp if it only exists in the clone?
No. Each copy holds its own chats. Export from the copy where the conversation lives.
Is WhatsApp Business exported the same way?
Yes, but do it from inside the WhatsApp Business app. Its chats are separate from the personal app.
Why can I not find the exported file from my clone app?
Clone apps may store files in a hidden area. Share the export to Downloads or Files at the moment you create it.
Does ChatIntoPDF need the clone app installed?
No. You only upload the exported .txt or .zip file, which you can convert on any browser.
