Fixing problems
Why a WhatsApp PDF Will Not Open on iPhone
A PDF made from a WhatsApp chat should open on any iPhone. When it does not, the cause is almost always the download, the file name or the app used to view it, and each one has a simple fix.
Start with the file itself
Before blaming the phone, check the file. A PDF that fails to open is usually one of three things: the download did not finish, the file was saved under a name iOS does not recognise as a PDF, or the file is being opened in an app that cannot display it. Each has a different fix, so work through them in order.
Cause 1: the download was interrupted
Mobile connections drop, and a PDF that stops halfway is not valid. iOS may still show the file, but the viewer then reports that the document cannot be opened or is damaged. Open the Files app, find the PDF and look at its size. A file of zero kilobytes, or one much smaller than the rest of your converted results, means the download failed.
- Delete the partial file from the Files app.
- Go back to the converted result and download it again on Wi-Fi if you can.
- Wait until the download indicator finishes before you tap the file.
Cause 2: the file name or type is wrong
Some browsers save a download without the .pdf ending, or add an extra extension such as .pdf.txt. A file with an unknown ending opens in whichever app iOS guesses, which is often a text viewer that shows strange symbols. Rename the file so it ends in .pdf. If the name is correct but the icon is generic, the file type is wrong, and the download should be repeated.
Cause 3: the viewer app is the problem
The Files app, Safari, Mail and third-party readers all handle PDFs, but an outdated or broken app can refuse a valid file. Try a different viewer. Open the PDF from the share sheet in Safari, then try the Files app preview. If both fail, the file is the issue, not the app.
- Save the PDF to Files first, then open it from there rather than from a chat or a browser preview.
- Update iOS and any PDF reader app in the App Store.
- Avoid opening the file from a messaging app, which may hand over only a partial copy.
Cause 4: the source export was broken
If the chat export itself was incomplete, the PDF may still open but look empty or cut short. A zip file that would not extract causes the same kind of trouble. Check the source first, using the guide on corrupted WhatsApp zip files, then convert again from a good export so the PDF is rebuilt from scratch rather than patched.
Converting again with ChatIntoPDF
ChatIntoPDF converts a WhatsApp export in your browser. The chat is not uploaded, and no account is needed. The free preview shows the start of the converted chat so you can confirm the result before paying. Choose one of four styles, Classic, Clean, Formal or Book, and download again. The 24-hour pass from $1.99 covers unlimited chats, so trying again within that window does not cost more. ChatIntoPDF is an independent tool and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
Quick checklist
- Check the file size in the Files app.
- Make sure the name ends in .pdf.
- Try a second viewer app.
- Convert again from a complete export if the file is still broken.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the PDF open on my computer but not on my iPhone?
The file is probably fine. Compare the sizes. If the iPhone copy is smaller, the transfer was cut short, so send it again or download it directly on the phone.
Can a full iPhone stop a PDF from opening?
Yes. A phone with almost no free storage can fail to finish a download or save a file. Free some space and download again.
Will I lose my chat if the PDF will not open?
No. The original WhatsApp export is a separate file. Keep it safe and convert it again whenever you need a fresh PDF.
Does ChatIntoPDF upload my chat?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, and the chat is not uploaded to a server.
