Fixing problems
Why Your WhatsApp Chat Export Is Too Big
A chat export that includes photos, videos and other attachments can run to hundreds of megabytes. Most of that weight can be cut before you convert anything to PDF.
Why the file gets so large
When you export a chat from WhatsApp you are offered two choices: export without media, or include media. The text-only version is a list of messages with timestamps and sender names, and it is usually small enough to email. The version with media bundles every photo, video and file shared in the chat into a .zip archive. In a busy family group or a work group that has run for years, that archive can be several hundred megabytes, and a single long video can account for much of it.
The size problem is almost always the attachments, not the words. A few thousand text messages take up only a small amount of space. If your export is huge, the media is the reason.
Option 1: export without media
The simplest fix is to export the chat again with media turned off. The menu names differ slightly between phones and app versions, but the steps look like this.
- Open the chat in WhatsApp.
- On Android, tap the three-dot menu, choose More, then Export chat. On an iPhone, tap the contact or group name, scroll down and choose Export Chat.
- Select the option labelled Without media.
- Save the .txt file to your phone or computer.
Upload that .txt file to ChatIntoPDF. A text-only export converts quickly, and the PDF keeps every message, date and sender. What you give up is the photos, which appear as placeholder lines. If the pictures matter to you, the guide on what the media omitted line means explains how to bring them back.
Option 2: split the chat by date
If the text-only file is still too long, or you only need one period, split it yourself. WhatsApp cannot export a date range, but the .txt file is plain text, and every message begins on its own line with a date and time. That makes it easy to cut out the part you want.
- Open the .txt file in a plain text editor such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit in plain text mode on a Mac.
- Search for the first line of the period you want, for example a line that starts with the date you need.
- Copy only the lines you need into a new file, or delete everything above that line.
- Save the new file with a .txt extension and choose UTF-8 encoding if the editor offers it. Keep the original untouched.
Saving as UTF-8 matters because it keeps emojis and accented letters intact. Each split file can then be converted on its own, which gives you two or more shorter PDFs.
Option 3: deal with the attachments you do need
If you exported with media, extract the .zip into its own folder and look at what is inside. The media files are ordinary image and video files, so you can move the largest videos out, compress them with a desktop tool, or keep only the chat text file if you do not need the pictures. Keep the text file and media together and do not rename anything, because the chat text refers to attachments by filename.
Photos are reproduced inline in ChatIntoPDF only on a higher tier. For a text-focused PDF you may not need the media at all, and the text-only .txt is the lighter upload.
Message limits and what to expect
The size of an export depends on the phone, the app version and how much media the chat holds. The number of messages is less of a limit than the attachments. A long chat with almost no media is usually fine, while a shorter chat full of video can be the bigger file. Test with the text export first, rather than guessing from the message count.
If a conversion takes a long time, the text file is probably very long. Splitting it into two halves gives you two shorter PDFs that are easier to check and share.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a WhatsApp export smaller without losing messages?
Yes. Export without media. The text keeps every message, timestamp and sender, and only the attachments are left out.
Does splitting the file lose anything?
Not if you keep the original. Make copies for the parts you want, and the original .txt still holds every line.
Why is my .zip so large when the chat is short?
Attachments drive the size. A short chat with a few long videos can produce a much bigger archive than a long text-only chat.
Do I need an account to convert a large chat?
No. ChatIntoPDF does not require an account. You pay once per chat from $1.99 if you want the full PDF.
