Why Messages Seem Missing From a WhatsApp Export

You open the converted chat and a conversation you remember is thin, or a message is simply not there. Usually the message was never in the export, and a short check will tell you why.

First, confirm what is missing

Before assuming the export is at fault, check whether the message is in the source file. Open the exported .txt in a plain text editor and search for a distinctive word from the message you expected. If the word is there, the export contains it and the problem is in the conversion or the view. If the word is not there, the export never held that message, and you need to work out why.

This one check separates the two situations and saves a lot of guessing.

Reason 1: attachments were left out

When you export without media, each photo, video, voice note or document is replaced by a placeholder line such as <Media omitted>. The message is still there, but the attachment itself is not. People often think a whole exchange has vanished when only the pictures are missing. Export with media if you need the attachments, or accept the placeholders for a text-focused record.

Reason 2: disappearing or view-once messages

Messages set to disappear after a timer are removed from both phones when the timer ends, so they cannot appear in a later export. View-once photos and videos are also not kept in the chat in the same way, and they usually do not appear in the export. If a conversation was mostly disappearing messages, the export will look sparse, and that reflects what WhatsApp still holds.

Reason 3: messages were deleted or the chat was cleared

A message deleted for everyone is removed from the chat, and an export made afterwards will not contain its content. The exact placeholder text depends on the app version. Clearing a chat on your phone also removes its history from that device, so an export made after clearing will be short. A chat that was cleared before you exported cannot be recovered from the export.

Reason 4: the history is on a different phone

A WhatsApp export only includes messages stored on the phone you export from. If you changed phones, reinstalled the app without restoring a backup, or used the chat on another device, the older messages may live elsewhere. Restore the backup on the phone that holds the history first, then export from there.

Reason 5: group history before you joined

In a group, a new member sees messages from the point they joined onward, not the full history. An export from that phone therefore starts late. The earlier messages exist only on phones that were members at the time.

Reason 6: you cannot export a date range

WhatsApp exports the whole chat. It does not let you choose a start and end date. If you want a shorter file, export the chat and cut it down yourself in a text editor, keeping the original as a backup.

Checking the PDF against the source

  1. Pick a message you expected, and note a word or name from it.
  2. Search the exported .txt for that word.
  3. If the word is in the .txt but not in the PDF, convert again and check the free preview.
  4. If the word is not in the .txt, the export does not contain it, so use the reasons above to find out why.

What ChatIntoPDF does and does not do

ChatIntoPDF converts the file it is given. It cannot recover messages that were never exported, and it does not retrieve deleted or disappearing content. What it does is turn the complete export into a clean PDF with dates, senders and text in order, using four styles: Classic, Clean, Formal or Book. The conversion runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the free preview lets you check the result before you pay. The 24-hour pass from $1.99 covers unlimited chats with no account. ChatIntoPDF is independent and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatIntoPDF bring back deleted messages?

No. It converts the export it receives. If a message is not in that file, the converter has nothing to put in the PDF.

Why do I see <Media omitted> where the photos should be?

The text-only export replaces attachments with placeholders. Export with media to include the files in the archive.

Why is a long chat so short in the export?

Common reasons are disappearing messages, a cleared chat, or a phone that does not hold the full history. Check each one.

Will exporting again change the messages I already have?

No. Exporting copies the chat. It does not delete or change anything in WhatsApp.
