A WhatsApp Export Zip That Will Not Open or Looks Corrupted
A corrupted zip from a WhatsApp export is almost never a problem with WhatsApp itself. The archive was usually cut short while it was moved, saved or downloaded, so the fix is to make a clean copy.
What corruption looks like
A damaged archive shows up in a few familiar ways. Windows may say the compressed folder is invalid or cannot be opened. macOS may refuse to open the file and call it damaged. Some tools report an unexpected end of archive or a CRC error, which means a checksum did not match the data. In each case the zip is incomplete or altered, and the text inside may be partly unreadable.
The most common causes
- A download that stopped on a weak mobile connection.
- An email attachment that was trimmed or blocked because it exceeded a size limit.
- A USB cable that was unplugged while the file was copying.
- A phone that ran out of storage during the export.
- A cloud sync that uploaded only part of the file before it was interrupted.
- A zip that was opened, edited or re-zipped by another app, which can change its structure.
The last cause is easy to miss. If you opened the zip, moved a file inside it or saved it again through a tool that rebuilds archives, the result can fail to open even though the transfer was clean.
Step 1: test the archive
Extract the zip into a new, empty folder. Do not extract it over an existing folder, because you cannot then tell what was written. If extraction completes and you can open the text file, the archive is fine and the problem is elsewhere. If extraction stops with an error or produces a text file that ends abruptly, the archive is damaged.
- Create an empty folder on your computer.
- Extract the zip into that folder, not into the one where the original sits.
- Open the text file and scroll to the last lines to see whether the chat ends normally.
Step 2: re-export the chat
The clean fix is to export the chat again from the phone. Open the chat in WhatsApp, use the menu to choose Export chat, and pick either With media or Without media. Then move the file to your computer with a method that does not drop data: a USB cable, AirDrop between Apple devices, or a cloud drive that finishes syncing before you open the file. Avoid sending the export as an email attachment if it is large.
If you only need the messages, export without media. The text file is much smaller, so it is far less likely to be damaged in transit and it converts quickly.
Step 3: keep a good copy
Once you have a working export, store a copy in a second place before you convert or edit anything. Leave the original zip untouched and work from a duplicate. That way a bad conversion never costs you the source file.
Converting the clean export
ChatIntoPDF reads the exported .txt or .zip directly, so a good archive can go straight into the converter. The conversion runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and a free preview shows the result before you pay. Four styles are available, and the 24-hour pass from $1.99 covers unlimited chats with no account. ChatIntoPDF is an independent tool and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
If the converter rejects an archive, that is a useful signal. Treat it as a damaged copy and re-export rather than repeating the same upload.
Summary
- Test the zip by extracting it into an empty folder.
- If it fails, export the chat again from the phone.
- Transfer with a cable, AirDrop or a fully synced cloud drive.
- Keep a copy of the working export before converting it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I repair a corrupted WhatsApp zip?
Sometimes a repair tool can recover part of an archive, but the reliable route is a fresh export. A new export avoids any chance of partial or altered data.
Why does my zip open on the phone but not on the computer?
The phone copy may be complete while the copy on the computer is not. Compare file sizes and transfer the file again with a cable or a cloud drive.
Will re-exporting delete anything from my WhatsApp?
No. Exporting makes a copy of the chat. Your messages stay in the app as they were.
Does a text-only export avoid corruption?
It lowers the risk. A text-only export is a single small file, so there is less to damage. It does not include photos or videos.
