Fixing problems
Fixing "Cannot Open File" After a WhatsApp Chat Export
You exported a chat, tapped the file and got a message saying it cannot be opened. The export is usually fine. The problem is the app trying to open it or a zip that has not been unpacked.
What the export actually produces
WhatsApp can export a chat in two forms. A text-only export is a single .txt file, with one message per line and a date, time and sender on each line. An export that includes media is a .zip archive, which contains the same text file plus every photo, video and voice note that was shared. File names differ between Android and iPhone, and they are often built from the chat name, but the pattern is consistent: a .txt file for text, or a .zip file for everything.
Knowing which of the two you have is the first step. Most "cannot open" messages come from trying to open the right file in the wrong app.
Cause 1: the .txt file is opening in the wrong app
Tapping a .txt file can send it to a word processor, a note-taking app or a document viewer that does not handle plain text well. Some of these refuse the file outright, especially if the file is large. Open it instead in a plain text editor such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit in plain text mode on a Mac. If you are on a phone, a basic text viewer in the Files app will work.
Cause 2: the .zip has not been unpacked
A zip archive cannot be read as a chat until it is extracted. Some preview tools show the archive but cannot display the messages inside. On Windows, right-click the zip and choose Extract All. On a Mac, double-click it. On a phone, use the Files app and choose the unzip or extract option. Once extracted, look for the text file, which is usually named something like _chat.txt or contains the chat name.
- Locate the .zip file in your Downloads folder or the Files app.
- Extract it into a new, empty folder so nothing gets mixed up.
- Open the text file from that folder in a plain text editor to confirm the messages are readable.
Cause 3: the file was damaged in transfer
If the zip opens but reports missing or unreadable content, the transfer was probably interrupted. Email attachments that exceed the size limit, cloud sync that stopped halfway and USB cables that were removed early can all leave a partial file. Download or send the export again rather than trying to repair it. The guide on corrupted WhatsApp zip files covers this in more detail.
Cause 4: the email or preview app is refusing the file
Some email apps and cloud previews will not show a .zip at all, and they report a generic error. Download the file to your device first, then open it from the local copy. This removes the preview layer from the problem.
Converting the export directly
You do not need to extract the zip before converting. ChatIntoPDF accepts the exported .txt or .zip file directly. Upload it, and the converter reads the chat itself. The conversion runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the free preview lets you check the result before you pay. The 24-hour pass from $1.99 covers unlimited chats with no account. ChatIntoPDF is independent and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta.
What to try, in order
- Confirm whether you have a .txt or a .zip.
- Open a .txt in a plain text editor, not a word processor.
- Extract a .zip into an empty folder before opening it.
- If the file is damaged, export the chat again.
- Upload the original .txt or .zip to ChatIntoPDF.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my WhatsApp .txt export open as a jumble of symbols?
The app is probably reading the file with the wrong text encoding. Open it in a plain text editor that supports UTF-8, which is the format WhatsApp uses.
Do I have to unzip the export before converting it?
No. ChatIntoPDF accepts the exported .txt or .zip directly, so you can upload the archive as it is.
What if the zip file says it cannot be extracted?
The archive is probably damaged. Export the chat again and transfer it with a cable or a cloud drive rather than email.
Is the message content lost if the file will not open?
Not on the phone. The chat stays in WhatsApp. Only the exported copy is affected, so a new export gives you a fresh file.
